Annual Kite Festival

The Bali Kite Festival is an annual cultural and religious event featuring traditional giant kites, lively gamelan bands, and village team competitions. Held primarily during the windy dry season in July and August, the main events take place along the beaches of Sanur, such as Padang Galak and Mertasari Beach.

Festival Traditions and Highlights

  • Traditional Kites: Giant handcrafted structural designs including Bebean (fish-shaped), Janggan (bird/dragon-shaped with massive tails), and Pecukan (leaf-shaped).
  • New Creation Kites: Creative modern shapes depicting Hindu mythological figures, animals, and modern characters.
  • The Night Flying Phenomenon
LED Integration: Local flyers attach battery-powered LED lights—typically in neon green, blue, red, and white—along the bamboo frames or massive tails of the kites.
  • Community Teams: Competitions feature local village (banjar) teams complete with traditional flag bearers and live gamelan musicians.
  • Spiritual Roots: Originally organised as a seasonal agrarian offering to thank Hindu deities for abundant harvests and favourable winds.
